On demand - 2025 - Term 4

Webinar Description
Creating boarding environments where First Nations students feel safe, supported and able to thrive requires intentional design, strong relationships and culturally responsive practice. In this webinar, Kris Wheeler shares the practical journey of St Philip’s College and the evolution of its First Nations boarding program.

Kris reflects on where the program began and how it has developed into the 2025 model in place today, outlining the key decisions, challenges and learnings along the way. The session explores safety and duty of care within boarding, including the physical layout of boarding spaces, staffing structures, and approaches to education and learning that support engagement and success.

The webinar highlights targeted enrichment and bridging programs, involvement in the Polly Farmer programs, and a strong focus on life skills education to prepare students for both school and life beyond boarding. Health and wellbeing are also central, with discussion on sport and community participation, nutrition, wellness supports and access to on-site medical services.

A strong emphasis is placed on community, particularly the importance of connection to family, culture and tradition. Kris shares examples of how boarding programs can meaningfully engage families, honour cultural practices and create special moments that strengthen belonging and identity for First Nations students.

This session is designed for boarding leaders and staff seeking practical, experience-based insights into what works when supporting First Nations boarders in a culturally safe and inclusive environment.
